On-screen information
Battle screen
- ① Character
- Indicates the character played by player 1.
- ② SPIRIT
- This is the gauge used when performing special moves. The more powerful the attack, the more gauge is spent.
- ③ HP
- This is the character's HP. Results in a game over when reaches 0.
- ④ Equipment
- The items held by Mizoguchi. There are three types of items: [Recovery] [Helper] and [Power Up], and all provide a supporting effect to Kobayashi. These can only be used by consuming the gauge while Mizoguchi is on screen.
- ⑤ Character
- Indicates the character played by player 2 or the CPU.
- ⑥ SCORE
- Increases when you hit and defeat enemies. More points can be scored by hitting with a special attack.
- ⑦ TIME
- This game's playtime. The clearing time is added to the rankings board.
Pause menu
- Number of enemies defeated
- Show how many enemies have been defeated. All henchmen belong to one of the five groups. Defeating 30 members of one group will cause its boss to appear.
- Status
- Indicates the HP, SPIRIT and status of your allies.
- Select Items
- The items carried by Mizoguchi can be changed here.
- Player Settings
- The current character, number of players and support type can be changed here.
- Controller Settings
- Button settings can be changed here.
- Volume & Language
- ・The [BGM], [Sound effects] and [Voices] sound settings can be made here. ・The [Language] of the displayed text can be changed here.
- Back
- ・Closes the pause menu and returns to the game screen.
- Title
- ・End the current game and returns to the main title. The progression since your last save will be lost.
Main title screen
- New Game
- Starts a game from the beginning.Launches the opening scene after the number of players selection and character making screens.
- Continue
- Resumes the game at the point of your last save. After selecting the number of players, the game screen will appear.
- Options
- Sound volume and controller options can be set here. Character upgrade and items acquisition can be performed here too.
- Ranking
- Displays the ranking of the completed games by their clearing time.

- You can obtain and change the items held by Mizoguchi here.

- BGM
- Set the volume of the BGM in-game.
- Sound Effects
- Set the volume of the sound effects in-game.
- Voice
- Set the volume of the characters' voices in game.

- Set the language of the displayed text.
- Delete Saved Data
- Completely removes the save data of this game.
- Clear Counts
- Indicates the number of times the game has been cleared.
- ★ (stars) obtained
- Shows how many stars ★ you have in your possession. You can obtain new equipment or power-up your character by using these ★.

Actions
- Movements
- Move the character around with the D-pad.
- Dash
- Press rapidly twice a direction button (left or right) to perform a dash.
- Sidestep
- Press rapidly twice a direction button (up or down) to perform a sidestep.
- Jump
- You can jump by pressing the jump button. Pressing the jump button again in mid-air will trigger a second jump.
- Special Moves
- You can launch special moves with the special attack button. You can hold the button to launch an even more powerful version.
- Attacks
- Normal attack
- Three types of attacks are performed using the D pad and the attack button.
- A attack:
- Press the attack button
- B attack:
- Press the left (or right) key of the D pad+ the attack button.
- C attack:
- Press the up (or down) key of the D pad+ the attack button.
- Jump attacks
- You can also attack while in the air after a jump. You can continue attacking enemies that were sent flying with your jump attacks.
- Combos
- Any series of attacks is considered a combo. Completing a combo on an opponent will leave them unbalanced.
- Pushback attacks
- Any character already unbalanced that receives a hit will be sent flying. The type of pushback may vary depending on the attack and it is possible to hit the character while in the air.
- Follow-up attacks
- You can catch mid-air an opponent sent flying using the jump button. If your timing is correct, you will be able to coin in extra hits.
- Special Moves
- You can launch special moves with the special attack button. You can hold the button to launch an even more powerful version.
Equipment
The items that Mizoguchi carries have different supporting effects for Kobayashi-san. You can change the active item by pressing the Item Selection button. Select the item and press the attack button to confirm your choice. There are three types of equipment, [Recovery], [Helper] and [Power Up], and all can be used by consuming your power gauge, only when Mizoguchi is on screen.
Equipment types
- RECOVERY
- Cures all status conditions and all on-screen allies recover HP and SPIRIT. Using stars, you can upgrade this item for an increased effect.
- POWER UP
- Enhances Kobayashi-san's power for a short time. The damage dealt to enemies and moving speed are increased for a short time.
- HELPER
- Calls in Ryuichi and Ryuji for help. You can use the character switch button to select and play them while they take position on screen.
Switching Characters
- Switching the active character
- Pressing the character switch button will change the character you control.
- When two characters are on screen
- When three characters are on screen
- Switching allies
- You can change the character that is helping you (Mizoguchi, Kunio etc...) by pressing the ally switch button.
Gimmicks
- Save Kitty
- You can save your data by talking to the Save Kitty. Since it's a cat, it might be at its usual spot, or not.
- Grenade
- "Explodes a short time after being activated. The explosion will damage your enemies as well as your allies."
- Flying Machine
- Looks like an enemy character. You can jump onto it. If you manage to climb onto it, you can use it to fly and use its missiles.
- Holes
- Falling in a hole results in an immediate KO, and Kobayashi will have to start over the level again, so be very careful not to fall in there. However they might be a fast way to get rid of enemies...
- Keepsakes
- Defeating Markers will have them drop time-lost keepsakes. Picking up memorial items will have Kobayashi go into power-up mode for a short time.
Character Upgrade
- ★ (stars) obtained
- Collect stars by defeating leaders and clearing the game. You can use your stars to upgrade your characters in the options menu.
- Character Making
- "When starting a new game, you can define the main character's name, gender, their relationship with Kobayashi and a keepsake. All these settings have an influence on the ending of the game.
- Character Upgrade
- Powering-up
- Spend the ★ stars you have collected to power-up your characters. You can upgrade their HP, attack power or speed and learn new skills.
- New equipment
- Spend ★ stars to obtain new items for Mizoguchi to carry with him. Equipping Mizoguchi with these new items will increase the effect of his supporting abilities.

- Ranking
- A list of all your games ranked by clear time. You can sort the list by [personal score], [high score] and [clear time].

Search the areas for enemies, and defeat enough of them to have their leader show up. Defeating all leaders will push the last enemy to appear, and defeating the last boss triggers the ending. Use again the stars to power-up, rinse and repeat, until you complete all endings.
